RIO, LA CIDADE MARAVHILOSA (The Marvellous City), is an enormous coastal city in Brazil. It is famous for the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, for the 38-meter-tall Christ the Redeemer statue, perched atop Mount Corcovado, and for Sugarloaf Mountain, a granite peak accessible by cable car. The city is also known for its extensive favelas,a typical Brazilian urban and social phenomenon which reveal another side of the country, one that is often overlooked.
The exuberant Rio Carnival, with its parades of allegorical floats from samba schools, is considered the planet’s biggest popular festival.
Rio was the first metropolis to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural landscape (a combined work of nature and man), which can be admired from the top of its symbolic monuments, such as the Tijuca Forest – the largest urban rainforest area – and its stunningly beautiful Guanabara Bay.
